During the colonial period, naming helped Spaniards assert power and possession over Indigenous people, places, and things. This continued with Indigenous documents, since many Mesoamerican manuscripts “discovered” in the nineteenth century were named after European nobility, Mexican politicians, librarians, elite scholars, etc. Archaeologists Maarten Jansen and Gabina Aurora Pe´rez Jime´nez liken the renaming process that scholars and politicians enacted to baptism, which is fitting for its clear parallels of oppression and violent conversion of Indigenous people in sixteenth-century Mexico.
