The title refers to the geometric compositions of Pier Mondrian, whose paintings became an inspirational force for the music. These simple linear designs are presented in the music in three different forms, each of which creates a separate movement in the piece. The work calls for a large collection of percussion instruments, which are carefully chosen in number and in their position on stage.
